I’m posting this because it caught me off-guard. The article suggests she did it because she was facing so much prison time.
Prostitution, when it involves coercion or human trafficking, is disgraceful, and should be punished severely. But Deborah Jeane Palfrey was facing an estimated 6-15 years for what seemed like a victimless crime. Like our drug laws, this punishment far outstrips the crime and punishes only half of the perpetrating cohort.
Why isn’t admitted client Senator David Vitter going to jail, too?
Why should, barring the exceptions above, anyone go to jail for prostitution?
