The reformer Sarah Palin conducted a little business-as-usual (wink, head tilt, smile) by billing the State of Alaska for numerous travel expenses for her children. From the AP:
In all, Palin has charged the state $21,012 for her three daughters’ 64 one-way and 12 round-trip commercial flights since she took office in December 2006. In some other cases, she has charged the state for hotel rooms for the girls.
The GOP and their propaganda assets are going to try to use a double standard to deflect guilt on this one by saying that Palin is a mother and that her children need to be with her, but it should not fly. After all, she hasn’t had to face questions about how she raises her children because those questions would “never” be asked of a man. But in order to maintain that position, you need to behave like a man.
Sarah Palin has been traipsing around America with a Down’s Syndrome baby in her arms, using the child in photo ops and as a way to pander to the parents of special needs children. She behaves in a way that no male politician ever has or likely will.
She is playing by different rules, so different questions are applicable.
Beyond that, this is a matter that is purely black and white. What company (except, maybe, on Wall Street) has ever foot the bill for their employee’s family’s travel? You go on a business trip and you don’t get to take your son and daughter with you on the company dime.
But maybe this is how they do it in real America?
Reformer, my ass.
